If you’re after a really immersive travel experience that’s as spectacular as it is memorable, time your journey to take in a big festival in the country you’re visiting. Celebrating alongside local people is the perfect way to get to know them, their country and traditions, and have a whale of a time in the process! Get covered in coloured powder for Holi, or soaked with water pistols at the Songkran Water Festival. Stuff yourself with turkey and pumpkin pie at an American Thanksgiving, or do your best to observe the difficult daytime fast if you’re travelling in an Islamic country during Ramadan. Then there are Wild West antics at the Calgary Stampede, dragon dances and fireworks for Chinese New Year, and Nepal’s Machhendranath festival when the whole town comes together to tug a gigantic chariot through the streets.
