About Trip:

Sillustani is a pre-Incan cemetery on the shores of Lake Umayo near Puno. The tombs, which are built above ground in tower-like structures called chullpas, are the vestiges of the Qulla people, who are Aymara conquered by the Inca Empire in the 15th century.

What to expect ?

These ruined Incan mausoleum towers still bear carvings of sacred animals on their blocks. Rising up around the shore of Peru’s Lake Titicaca, the archaeological site known as Sillustani are the fascinating ruins of what may have once been a cylindrical necropolis.

Itinerary

Our half-day tour starts with pick up from your hotel in Puno around 2 pm to start our visit to the ceremonial Center Sillustani located 34 km from the city of Puno, this tour visit will allow us to appreciate the magnificent architecture and engineering.

The chullpas are circular stone towers erected to house the funerary remains of the principal authorities of the ancient settlers of Collao (altiplano). Some reach up to 12 meters high and are characterized because their base is smaller in diameter than the upper part. A short distance from the archaeological complex is the site museum, where various pieces of the Kolla, Tiahuanaco, and Inca cultures are preserved.

One of the most famous attractions of the Sillustani complex is the'Chullpa del Lagarto', a funerary tower that represents the highest Chullpa of the complex. Built-in the Inca era and raised with square stones that fit perfectly. It was destroyed at the beginning of the 19th century by huaqueros who sought the treasures of the place. Another beautiful place in Sillustani is the Umayo lagoon, an incredible mirror of water that reflects the blue sky and the white clouds of Puno. This lagoon houses an island that is a reserve for the protection of local vicuñas.

Tour in Sillustany takes approximately 1 hour and we will be going back to Puno, where we will arrive around 5 pm.
